The four volumes examined for this review are Information Technology; Internet and Media; Nonprofits and Government; and Outdoor Careers. Each volume is organized like a typical field guide and even uses similar terminology. There are 10 or 11 chapters on individual careers, each containing sections such as Career Compass (which tells the job seeker what is needed in terms of skills); Destination (a brief overview of the occupation); Essential Gear (resumes, training, etc.); and Organizing Your Expedition (how to break into the career). One of the most important and unique sections for each career is Landmarks, which offers advice tailored to different age groups, from people in their twenties to those over sixty. Notes from the Field provides interviews with people already working in the career. A Resources section gives the reader three or four organizations and Web sites for further information. The Field Guides to Finding a New Career series is the perfect resource for anyone needing a good starting point for a career change, and the price is well within the budget of even a small public library. The only quibble is that there is no volume on green jobs.
